Green Peas Masala  ratingratingratingratingrating

Preperation Time: 5 min. + soaking time 8 hours

Cooking Time: 30 min.

Serves: 4

Dried green peas - 1/2 cup, 125 gms (soak overnight)

Onion - 2 big, chopped

Ginger - garlic paste - 2 tsp

Green chilli - 2 or 3, slitted

Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp

Coriander powder - 2 tsp

Fennel powder (perumjeerakam podi) - 3/4 tsp

Tomato - 1 small

Medium thick coconut milk - 1 1/2 – 2 cups

I used Maggi coconut milk powder to make the coconut milk.

Curry leaves - 1 stem

Salt - to taste

Oil - 2 tsp

Preparation Method

Wash the dried green peas and soak them in water overnight.Drain the water and pressure cook them with 1 1/2 cups of water and salt. I cooked it for 1 whistle and kept it closed for 20 mins. Separate the cooked green peas and stock.

Heat oil in a pan.

Add the chopped onions and saute till it turns golden brown.

Add ginger garlic paste and green chilli. Saute for 2 - 3 mins.

Add all the masala powders along with 2 Tbsp of water. Stir well and saute for about 3 mins on a low flame.

Turn the flame off and let the masala cool. Grind the masala to a smooth paste, adding water, if required.

In the same pan (add more oil if required), saute the ground masala for a minute.

Add curry leaves, chopped tomato and salt (since salt is already added to peas while cooking, be careful while adding it to the gravy). Mix well and sauté for a minute.

Add the stock and let it boil.

Then add cooked green peas and mix well.

Now add coconut milk, let it boil. The gravy thickens further when it cools down, so adjust the consistency to suit your taste.

Cover and cook for about 2 minutes.

Open the lid and mix well.

Remove from the flame and serve hot with Roti, Appam or even with Dosa..
