Soak moong dal overnight.

Cook moong dal in a vessel with enough water and a pinch of salt.

Drain excess water and keep the moong dal aside. (Make sure that you do not over cook cherupayar)

Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds.

Then add onion, curry leaves and saute till onion turns light golden in colour.

Now, turn the flame to very low and add turmeric powder and red chilli flakes and saute for a while. (Make sure not to burn chilli flakes).

Then add grated papaya, grated coconut and salt.

Mix well, cover and cook on a low flame for about 5 - 6 minutes.(Make sure that you do not overcook the papaya).

Open the lid and add cooked payar into it.

Check salt and add if needed. Mix well.

Let it cook without the lid for couple of minutes on a medium flame.

Now, turn the flame off.

Serve hot with rice.

You can use kadala (brown chana) instead of cheru payar.

Moong dal will double in voulme after soaking.

You can make this dish even without moong dal.
